Meet Matt Cates: Director of 4Life Constructions from Victor Harbor, South Australia.
‘Carpentry found me. An older friend was doing smaller projects and asked me to give him a hand. That soon became regular, and before I knew it, I was an apprentice carpenter. From there, I took on bigger challenges and built complete projects from start to finish. For me, it’s not just a job – it’s something I genuinely enjoy every day.
‘4Life Constructions is now in its ninth year. My wife Bec plays a big role in the company, alongside our eight staff members. Custom and architectural homes are where we focus our energy. No two homes are ever the same – each one is tailored to our clients’ needs.
‘The Fleurieu Peninsula has been home since I was five and the supportive community here has played a big role in our company’s growth. Word of mouth is powerful, and people really take notice of the projects we deliver. All our staff are locals. We surf together, spend time outside of work, and share a real pride in the area.
‘Looking after my team is a top priority. Many of us have young families, so we stay flexible with school runs and events. We’ve introduced a nineday roster so everyone gets every second Friday off. We also run monthly meetings, barbecues and an annual surf trip, plus support courses and training for professional growth.
‘Outside of work, I’m a passionate bodyboarder and Muay Thai enthusiast. Both keep me fit and grounded, whether I’m clearing my head in the ocean or training with my gym team. Most importantly, I’m a husband and dad to two young boys, Kai and Bodhi. Running my own business gives me the flexibility to enjoy time with them. ‘Winning HIA’s 2023 South Australia Emerging Builder award was a career highlight. It gave us confidence that we’re on the right path.'
