Raising two young daughters in the beautiful coastal town of Carlton east of Hobart, Jesse and Cat work hard to not just meet but exceed their clients’ expectations.

Meet Jesse Bateman & Cat Chalmers: Directors at 2B Building, Carlton, Tasmania

Jesse: ‘After leaving school I worked in various trades, taking time off to travel. My passions are snowboarding and surfing. When I returned to Tasmania, I completed my apprenticeship in a well-established firm. I was asked to be a partner and formed 2B Building. My business partner’s retirement provided the opportunity for Cat and me to take on and grow the company. We are proud of our reputation, specialising in building bespoke high-quality homes. We work with a network of progressive architects who see us as part of a team they can trust. We all want the same thing – to work in close cooperation with our clients and deliver outstanding results.'

Jesse, Cat and their daughters love their life by the ocean in Tasmania.
Jesse has a hands-on involvement in all projects.
Cat: ‘A key reason for our success is the preference of Jesse having a hands-on involvement in all projects. We have no more than two to three jobs underway at once. That way we can keep a close eye on each project and ensure clear communication with everyone involved.'
Our family is heavily involved in the local community and feel blessed to live in such a beautiful area which offers so much.’

Jesse: ‘Limiting the number of projects has been a good move. Each home we build is different with unique challenges. With the architects we work with, we get a chance to build innovative designs and utilise new products. After 20 years in the industry, I’m still excited about learning every day. To be honest, I couldn’t do what I do without Cat. She works part-time outside of our business, while being actively involved in our projects. From accounts to keeping our suppliers and contractors happy, she helps keep it all together.'

Cat: ‘Having two young daughters sets the agenda for our family. We’re a water family, for sure. We live near the beach. Our girls love swimming and camping. Actually, we all do.'

Jesse: ‘I’m happy outdoors; freediving, fishing and surfing. Our family is heavily involved in the local community and feel blessed to live in such a beautiful area which offers so much.’

Regional winner

Congratulations to 2B Building’s apprentice Kalan Hutchins, who was recently awarded 2025 Tasmania Apprentice of the Year, partnered by Stratco.
