‘I got to know the housing construction industry many years ago in my specialised legal practice, assisting builders with anything from contract documents, disputes, council regulations and local government.
‘I was invited to become a member of HIA by John Dastlik, the WA Regional Director, so I could sit on the HIA Legal Committee.
‘My role on committees led to HIA presidency in WA, then as National President from 2017-'19.

‘I was granted HIA Life Membership in 2019 and awarded the Sir Phillip Lynch Award of Excellence this year for services to the industry in Australia.
‘While I was on HIA’s National Board, we introduced the HIA Charitable Foundation. HIA needed to demonstrate to its members and the public that we had a heart and soul. It was one thing to be a professional and competent builder, contractor or manufacturer but we could do more.
‘I see my role as prompting our members to be conscious of issues other than building houses. We identified that the mental health issues confronting our members, apprentices and staff were alarming. As a result, for more than a decade we’ve partnered with Beyond Blue to raise awareness and funds so its programs can continue and impact people.
‘My role as chair of the Foundation keeps me in contact with our members and HIA staff at a national level. I enjoy this as I’ve always said that members and staff of HIA are simply the best.
I continue to practice as a lawyer in WA, and this will be my 50th year as a legal practitionerPino Monaco
'My legal work has not deprived me of opportunities to serve our members and HIA. I’ve also managed to keep my hobbies of wine making, carpentry, gardening, fishing and owning Austin 7 vintage cars. And in recent times, I’ve been spending more time with my grandchildren.’
