Meet Dean O’Rourke: Executive General Manager, ABN Group WA & HIA National Director, Western Australia.
‘I began my apprenticeship in 1989, when interest rates were sitting at a staggering 17 per cent. My first job was meant to be with a builder, but he went into administration before I could even start.
‘It was a shaky beginning but soon after, HIA’s apprenticeship program opened a door for me at Dale Alcock Homes – and that opportunity shaped the course of my career.
From my early days onsite, I learned that hard work and perseverance really pay off.
'After completing my apprenticeship, I moved from the tools into the office, stepping through roles in estimating, site management, production management, building management and ultimately, general management. Each stage taught me the value of building strong teams and reliable systems.
‘In 2015, I became Executive General Manager of ABN Group WA, a $1.8 billion construction business that has built more than 95,000 homes across WA and Victoria over the past four decades.
‘Today, I oversee our residential building companies: Homebuyers Centre, Celebration Homes, Dale Alcock Homes, Dale Alcock Projects, Dale Alcock South West, and Webb & Brown-Neaves, as well as our Group Training Organisation, which employs and trains 140 apprentices in WA. I lead nearly 600 employees, all working towards the same goal: delivering quality homes and building futures.
‘Beyond work, I’m passionate about family, fitness and football. My wife, Tania, and our daughters, Isabella and Sienna, are my anchor and my greatest source of support. Whether I’m boating, working or cheering for Collingwood, balance is something I work hard to maintain.'
