Meet Neil Gardiner & Matt Howard: Directors of Supa Group Extensions, Victoria.
Neil: ‘Supa Group launched in October 1974, established by Frank Way. The business has evolved from a simple home improvement offering into a fully fledged home extension and renovation company. Frank retired in 2014. I bought into the business at that time then Matt joined as Director of Building in 2020. Around every seven years, macro-economic challenges occur, such as the introduction of GST and the COVID kerfuffle. Unfortunately, that sorted out quite a few builders. Fortunately, we’re still in good shape and building roughly 40 projects a year.’
Matt: ‘A major change has been our offering which is now more turnkey than what it was five years ago. Our aim is to hand over a fully completed home extension project. We currently have 15 staff and around 50 subcontractors. Having great staff means things are handled well if any issues come up, which they invariably do when building extensions.’
Neil: ‘Partnerships can be challenging but our success lies in assisting each other. Matt is a carpenter and builder par excellence who has a good understanding of business and customer service. I’m an accountant who knows just enough about building to be dangerous! While we have a great team of designers, estimators, contract administrators and builders, it’s our shared values in business, and our empathy for clients and trades, that make Supa Group such a strong offering.’
Matt: ‘When I’m away from the office, I’m a keen squash and racquetball player. I’ve always been keen on fitness.’
Neil: ‘On the other hand, I’m more of a bookish type. I’m keen on local history and architecture and resting.’
Matt: ‘Being part of HIA has been important to Supa Group. I’m on the Regional Technical Committee while Neil sits on the Regional Membership Services Committee and the Regional Training & Professional Development Committee. HIA advocates for both builders and consumers, providing important insights to government and other authorities that impact the building industry.’
