Meet Trudy Perry: Operations Manager at C&R Constructions, Northern Territory.
‘From the moment I was exposed to workplace health and safety (WHS), I was drawn to the idea I could contribute to safer workplaces. It’s important to make sure everyone goes home happy and healthy every day. I now understand all aspects of WHS – compliance, cultural change and, most importantly, how to influence people in a positive way.
‘When I shared that I wanted to pursue a career in WHS, my supervisor at the time was discouraging and claimed it was too hard and to not bother. I was disheartened but not defeated. In fact, it became the foundation of my drive.
‘Over time, I built my knowledge, qualifications and experience in a variety of complex construction environments. My journey then led me to C&R Constructions, where I started as a WHS Advisor and moved up to Operations Manager.
I love the pressure of tight timeframes, the challenges that come with construction in the territory, and the problem solving on projects.Trudy Perry
‘Today, I ensure safety is prioritised. It empowers others to grow and strive for excellence. I’ve become a trusted voice in the company, a bridge between management and workers. I’m committed to progress and people.
‘I love the pressure of tight timeframes, the challenges that come with construction in the territory, and the problem solving on projects. But mostly I love the people I work with. Along the way, I’ve helped shift attitudes onsite, implement new technologies to improve compliance, advocate for mental health support, and built inclusive, respectful workplace cultures.
‘Mental health is so important to me. Construction work, especially at the Top End, can be tough, lonely and uncompromising. You work long hours, often in challenging environments. We are all resilient and able to solve problems, but often the hardest thing to do is talk about feelings and be kind to ourselves.
‘Recently I’ve been working with Mates in Construction as a connector and advocate. I want to be there for people today and in the future. To be a mentor to young people, especially young women taking on the challenge of working in our industry.
‘My advice to anyone, male or female, considering a career in construction is to learn everything you can, take every opportunity to be involved, participate even if it’s not in your job description. Be resourceful and hunt out mentors and people who believe in you.
‘When I’m not working, I absolutely love seeing the world around me in the Northern Territory. It’s such a unique place. The waterfalls, the sunsets, the food and markets. When I travel, I love to embrace new experiences and places. There’s so much to enjoy.
