Spotting a shift in housing demand, Sam and Krystle Barnett steered BCC Homes toward high-quality granny flats, turning a side project into a thriving Gold Coast venture.

Meet Sam & Krystle Barnett: Director & Sales Manager of BCC Homes, Gold Coast, Gold Coast and Northern Rivers.

Sam: ‘I started out as a carpenter in New Zealand before moving to Queensland. Over the past 25 years, I’ve built more than 1200 homes ranging from dual dwellings to waterfront showpieces. My wife Krystle and I launched BCC Homes in 2010. Along the way, we’ve seen the market shift; land is scarce, housing affordability is harder than ever, and families are looking for smarter, more flexible living solutions.’

‘That’s when we realised granny flats weren’t just a side project; they were the next chapter for us.

Krystle: ‘We wanted to reimagine them, creating spaces that are stylish, functional and built to last. For us, it’s not about “tiny homes” – these are full homes up to 80 square metres, built to the same standards as any new build, with approvals, foundations and all the works.’

Sam: ‘There also were changes in the state legislation relaxing tenancy laws, which really opened doors for homeowners. Granny flats are no longer seen as a temporary solution; they’re a real game-changer for families and investors alike.’.

Krystle: ‘At the heart of it though, it’s people. Every client has a story; whether they’re creating a space for ageing parents, helping kids into the market or planning for future income. My role is to guide clients through the journey, while Sam drives the building side. Together, we love being hands-on in every stage, right through to handover. There’s nothing like passing over the keys and seeing the excitement in someone’s eyes. That’s what it’s all about for us.’

Sam finds his bliss.

Sam: ‘We were honoured last year to be recognised with the Start-up Business Award at the 2024 HIA-CSR QLD Housing Awards in Brisbane. More than anything, it highlighted what we love most – creating beautiful, lasting homes for families across the Gold Coast.’

‘When I’m not working onsite, you will usually find me out in the surf. This keeps me grounded, clears my head and fuels my energy for both work and family life.’

Krystle: ‘For me, everything comes back to family and friends. Creating spaces that bring people together feels natural to me. Family is at the heart of everything we do.’’
