Meet our members: Daniel & Joseph Chaar

After more than 25 years in business, brothers Daniel and Joseph Chaar reveal how they turned a one-man maintenance operation into a true success story.

Daniel: My father was a builder, so construction has always been part of our lives. Joe and I started in the building industry nearly 30 years ago, working on the tools and learning the trade from the ground up. That hands-on experience gave us a real understanding of how projects come together. As we gained experience, we moved into supervisory and project management roles, building strong relationships with clients and trades. This eventually led us to establish Main on Construction & Maintenance.

Joseph: I started the business back in 1996. It was a one-man band operating out of a bedroom before moving into a room at our parents’ home. We focused on doing good work and looking after our clients.

Daniel: Joe built those early relationships and created the foundation of the business. Many of our Tier 1 clients today, including companies like Lendlease, have been with us for nearly 30 years.

Joe (L) and Daniel Chaar from Main on Construction & Maintenance.
The Main on Construction team believe there’s a solution to every problem.

Joseph: We believe there’s a solution to every problem. Construction is full of challenges, but anything that’s humanly possible can be solved if you’re prepared to think differently.

Daniel: That mindset has shaped our business model. We deliver construction projects, fit-outs, defect rectification and ongoing maintenance, giving our clients an end-to-end service. By staying involved after handover, we’re able to identify issues early, reduce rework and help clients protect their assets over the long term. It’s a smoother process for everyone because we’re accountable from beginning to end.

Joseph: Being honest is one of the most important parts of our business. If we find a problem, we don’t brush it under the carpet. We fix it.

Daniel: As the business grew, one of our biggest challenges was learning how to scale without compromising quality. In the early days, Joe and I were involved in every detail on every project. As the team expanded, we had to build systems, develop leaders and trust others while maintaining the standards we’d set for ourselves. Today we have around 90 people working in the field and more than 20 in the office.

This family business is built on trust and long-term relationships.

Joseph: Daniel and I have different strengths. I’m out onsite every day, working with clients, trades and residents. Because I grew up learning every aspect of the trade, from changing a lock through to major construction, I can answer questions and offer practical advice based on experience.

Daniel: My role is overseeing the business, supporting our people, managing clients, contractors and day-to-day operations. Every day presents a different challenge, and I enjoy solving problems and helping people find solutions. That’s what keeps me motivated.

Joseph: At the end of the day, we’re a family business built on trust and long-term relationships. That’s how we started, it’s how we’ve grown, and it’s how we’ll continue building for many years to come.
