Hunter President's report

{{ tag.label }} {{ tag.label }} $vuetify.icons.faTimes
Giving back to the industry is, and will continue to be a rewarding and fruitful experience says the HIA Hunters 8th Regional President.

Kaine Tarlinton

HIA Hunter President

In February, I was honoured to be elected the 8th HIA Hunter President, strongly supported by Rodney Tullipan of Valletta Homes as Vice-President. It is with great pleasure that I write my first article as President. I want to start with acknowledging the significant contribution and commitment made by outgoing President Greg Doodson. Over the next two years, I look forward to building on his legacy and that of previous presidents.

An enduring focus of HIA during Greg’s term was regular meetings with members to discuss issues regarding housing supply, price increases, skilled labour shortages, the impact of interest rate hikes and a fall in consumer confidence. Unfortunately, these issues remain crucial concerns. I hope to continue the great work in supporting the industry on these matters.

Each year, the housing industry adapts to shifting sector dynamics, and the year ahead will be no exception. With constant changes shaping the operating environment, I anticipate navigating new challenges and opportunities that will define our path forward.

From engaging with the NSW Government on proposed changes to the Home Building Act and the operation of the Home Building Compensation Fund to responding to the ongoing impact of interest rate rises and preparing members for the implementation of another new National Construction Code, as well as addressing other known and emerging policy matters, 2025 will certainly be another year to provide industry insights to governments at all levels.

HIA works to a committee structure that helps us identify industry issues, capture the richness of our regions, and make consistent decisions concerning core policy positions for promoting the housing industry.

For the next two years,10 HIA members, the Regional Executive Director and I will form the Hunter Regional Executive Committee. We will represent the local region, support policy development and provide a forum to address region-specific issues.

I am certain that the experience, relationships across the industry, and enthusiasm of the Regional Executive Committee members will strengthen our ability to respond to both local and national matters.

I look forward to working with the new Hunter Regional Executive Committee to ensure we retain a competitive residential housing industry, which is critical to the economic well-being and growth of the Hunter region and broader NSW.

As a certifier and licensed builder with over 20 years of experience and having sat on the Regional Executive Committee for several years now, including 2 years as vice president, I fully appreciate the importance of the role of President. I will continue the good work my predecessors achieved, and I look forward to meeting with as many members as possible over my tenure.
