Pantone, the global colour authority, announced this year’s colour of the year: Viva Magenta, which exudes a sense of playfulness, excitement and creativity.

Kerryn Ramsey

Senior Content Coordinator

Pantone’s current colour of the year, Viva Magenta, brings strength to a sometimes fragile world. The colour institute refers to the hue as a ‘nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool’.

Embracing its positivity, Viva Magenta is ‘a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration’.

While the allure of this vibrant tone is irresistible, just remember that a little goes a long way.

So how can you use Viva Magenta throughout the home? Here are some tips to liven up five different zones.

Kitchen

While neutral tones are always popular in kitchens, why not add some intrigue by adding a splash of Viva Magenta?

For real impact, introduce the colour on an island or benchtop surface. This can bring an instant burst of cheer.

A vivid white ceiling can help bounce the light around the space, allowing the colour to shine.

  • Calacatta ‘Viola’ honed marble from Artedomus

Feature wall

A bold way to use this sensual hue is by incorporating Viva Magenta as a wall colour – inside or out.

This colour element could range from a stand-out feature wall or a striking front door.

While this hue brings warmth and strength to a space, it also adds a real sense of spirit.

  • Scarlet Ribbons from Dulux

Home office

While a study is usually utilitarian, a one-off element, such as a pink-toned red armchair, can add energy to the space.

This colour also pairs beautifully with lush green indoor plants, creating a strong visual contrast in the space.

After all, a stand-out backdrop will get attention during Zoom meetings.

  • ‘Havberg’ swivel armchair and footstool in Lejde red/brown fabric from Ikea
Living rooms

An easy way to add Viva Magenta is through accessories. This could range from floor rugs to decorative pieces or even artwork.

The options for adding stand-out accessories to this space are endless.

It’s a chance to show clients that you’re up to date with current colour trends around the world.

  • ‘Telopea Bloom’ hand-tufted rug in wool by Patricia Braune from Designer Rugs

Wallpaper

Another way to incorporate this on-trend tone is with wallpaper. Select details and styles that add a personal touch to a room.

As a bonus, wallpaper can be easily removed, so the look can be updated regularly.

For contrast, it can be paired with grey elements – place a steely-grey sofa or charcoal-toned console in front of the wallpaper for real impact.

  • ‘Flight’ hand-printed wallpaper and fabric colourways, currently in development, from Signature Prints
