From colour blocking to fluted edges, these modern Australian kitchens are all about creating a statement in the home.

Clever contemporary kitchens do more than subscribe to what’s currently trending in interior design. Like these seven spaces, they carefully blend function with a mix of materials, shaping the feel of an open-plan room without overpowering it. Read on to get your creative ideas flowing.

1. Fluted fun

The fluted details on this island bench are an eye-catching feature that pair perfectly with a curved stone surface. The brassy marbled tones in the countertops, splashback and flooring effortlessly complement the tapware, lighting fixture and bold door handles.

This beautiful kitchen is a key part of the home that was awarded the 2022 HIA NSW Custom Built Home (over $2.5 million) to Blue Label Construction.

2. Clever curves

This neutral-toned kitchen shows the power of a curved island to add sophistication to a space. Extensive white cabinetry – sleekly running into a butler’s pantry – is calmly interrupted by soft timber joinery.

The well-executed kitchen is from a waterfront property, built by David Radic Prestige Homes, which was a finalist in the 2022 HIA Gold Coast/Northern Rivers Custom Built Home (over $3 million) award category.

3. Rich timber grains

The striking v-groove spotted gum in the hovering dropped ceiling is a standout feature in this impactful open-plan kitchen. The matching timber bar front in the stone island bench draws the eye next, adding warmth and balance to the room’s predominantly white components.

This bold kitchen is from a home on the NSW Central Coast that was awarded the 2022 HIA Hunter Custom Built Home ($1.5 million - $2 million) to Gremmo Homes.

4. Matching marble

Small in stature but big on style, this stunning kitchen by Bronxx makes clever use of marbled stone elements in not only the island bench and splashback but also the impressive centralised rangehood.

The cohesive open-plan design is brought together by lightly grained timber cabinetry, exuding luxury and warmth. It subsequently won the 2022 HIA NSW Kitchen of the Year up to $25,000 award.

5. Shade and light

Dark timber cabinetry is given a smooth, elongated appearance thanks to a hidden rangehood and unobtrusive strip lighting in this impressive kitchen. The large, lightly marbled stone island bench adds the perfect counterweight to its moody presence.

This kitchen is part of a Geelong home built by Furtulla Constructions, which was a finalist in the 2022 HIA Victoria Spec Home award category.

6. Earthy elements

The natural tones and finishes of a rammed earth wall, tumbled limestone tiles and warm timber accents give this contemporary kitchen a calming, coastal vibe. Copper tapware is cleverly matched with the earthy tones of the marble benchtops.

This kitchen is from a Perth property built by Adrian Zorzi which was a finalist in the 2022 HIA Western Australia Custom Built Home ($2.2 million - $3 million) award category.

7. Jewel tones

A spectacular green marble island is the statement piece of this stunning kitchen, while Victorian Ash cabinetry, floating black joinery and brass tapware give the space a sense of edgy elegance.

A collaborative effort by designer Stefan Vignogna, Finesse Built and Artisan Joinery, it was honoured with the 2022 HIA South Australia Kitchen of the Year New Kitchen over $85,001 award.
