A dramatic greyscale palette and intriguing interplay of texture and sculptural form come together in the 2023 HIA Australian Bathroom of the Year.

This dramatic bathroom belongs to a multi-award-winning home, The Ridge, located in Nelson Bay on the NSW north coast. Featuring varying shades and textures of grey, its design by HIA member Greenbuild Constructions takes its cues from the curvilinear architectural themes carried throughout the house.

Occupying centre stage is the large circular bathtub from Apaiser, tucked within a curved wall clad in fluted tiles to create a waterfall effect. The built form is carefully balanced by a smaller curved wall that leads to the shower area directly opposite.

From the custom recessed shaving cabinets and oak veneer vanity to the heavyset stone benchtop and dark Knurled Icon tapware from Astra Walker, luxurious and elegant details abound throughout the space.
Despite the moody aesthetic, the master ensuite feels spacious and light-filled, thanks to the high ceilings, Velux skylight and high louvred windows.

Kain Bliss, builder and owner of Greenbuild Constructions, says continuing the burnished concrete finished floor from the rest of the house into the wet areas required careful planning and execution.

‘We had to pour all the floor levels into the slab, which meant we had to work out the falls in the showers and where to place the shower strip drains prior to starting,’ he explains. ‘Every single point had to be set out perfectly and poured in the right location at the right height during the pour stage. This was an extremely challenging aspect of the job.’

The outstanding finish by the Greenbuild Constructions team resulted in the project winning the 2023 HIA Australian Bathroom of the Year award. The business also took out the 2023 HIA-CSR People’s Choice Home of the Year award for The Ridge.
