When Jason Tanchevski and his team took on the challenge to build a Hamptons-style dream home for his clients, he drew on an abundance of experience. Launched by his father Michael and uncle George Tanchevski in Canberra nearly 40 years ago, Classic Constructions have been run by Jason and his cousin, Jon (George’s son) for the past 10 years, while Jason has been involved with the company for more than 25 years. Classic Constructions have consistently been entering and winning awards since the early ’90s.
Last year, Classic Constructions won the prestigious Home of the Year award at the HIA-CSR ACT & Southern NSW Housing Awards. According to HIA Executive Director Greg Weller, ‘Winning a housing award is a true mark of success in the residential building industry and showcases to the public what they can expect from an award-winning HIA member.’
Now feeling satisfied for winning with this complex dwelling, Jason recalls many of the difficulties during the build. For instance, while it’s located in Canberra, the client had been working with a Queensland architect in the early stages. With planning rules varying from state to state, there were many factors that needed to be considered.
‘We came in quite late in the process,’ Jason recalls. ‘Aside from compliance differences, material and labour costs are higher in Canberra. We had to find adjustments that would provide the client value without compromising on the result.’
Communication and trust came into play for Jason’s team, the architect and the homeowners during the build. This was handy when COVID-19 hit smack bang in the middle of the build. When selecting bespoke finishes and materials, supply became a primary issue.
One example was the construction of the expansive front verandah. It required large timber posts to support the frame but timber in the required sizes were unavailable. Here, Jason pivoted quickly. ‘We decided to use hebel – a non-combustible product made from autoclaved aerated concrete - which was smoothed, rendered and painted to look like timber. In fact, you’d never know the difference.’
The resulting home is both sophisticated and functional. Jason is proud of the cohesion both inside and out. While the home is expansive, it’s compartmentalised so peaceful, tucked-away areas are incorporated. One such zone is the plush whisky room with an inviting fireplace. Additional luxury features include a tennis court, pool, spa and even a golf putting green.
Meticulously crafted, the custom joinery, coffered ceilings and decorative mouldings are a testament to the skills of the team. The bespoke Venetian plaster rangehood in the kitchen and the timber fireplace mantels provide delightful touches. Light floods the open spaces through large UPVC windows, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
While Jason’s father, Michael, is now semi-retired, his experience still comes in handy. Jason appreciates Michael’s skill of turning his team into a ‘family’. ‘We make sure everyone works together as a cohesive unit – year in, year out.’
The Hamptons style embraces coastal, refined elegance, with natural elements and a connection to nature. Jason’s 2024 HIA-CSR ACT & Southern NSW Home of the Year win not only exemplifies the quality of the build but pays homage to the homeowner’s dream of producing a comfortable and beautifully liveable home.
The HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards – one of the country’s most talked-about events in the industry – will conclude the three-day HIA National Conference in Melbourne on 15-17 May.
