For Michael and Tony Papadakis of PTM Group, building runs in the family. Established by their father Peter in the 1970s, the company is now run by the two sons. By growing and diversifying the business, Michael and Tony have taken it to a new level.
‘Apart from constructing custom-home builds, we’ve taken on projects for defence, hospitality and education, as well as building for remote Indigenous communities.’
The Fannie Bay residence is an executive residence that boasts a refined design that harmoniously blends elegance with modern functionality.
The client had a specific request – an oversized existing mature frangipani tree in the centre of the block needed to be incorporated into the build of the single-storey home.
‘Our solution was to create a U-shaped design, expanding outwards from the V-shaped block. This allowed for views of the tree and the gardens from as many angles as possible,’ says Michael.
The parents’ wing is positioned at one end with a private garden, while a central living area and kids’ retreat is in another wing. This allowed for natural light and air flow – a necessity in Darwin – topped off by architectural windows for visual impact.
According to Michael, specific materials weren’t readily available in the Territory, so they had to source them from various locations.
The award-winning home sets a new standard for refined living, incorporating modern, tropical design elements to create a serene sanctuary. Overall, the craftsmanship is evident – from the masonry to the steel skillion roof. The home feels connected to nature, from the garden views to the tactile raw stone features that provide a striking contrast to the crisp rendered finish of the front elevation.
From the flowing, airy interiors through to the alfresco zone and pool area, every part of this home showcases superior construction standards.
Michael was immensely proud of his team, particularly during the 2024 HIA-CSR Northern Territory Home of the Year win last year. He has also recognised the importance of a successful client-builder relationship. ‘An important measure of success is that our clients refer us on to their colleagues, friends and family. We can’t ask for more than that,’ he says.
And as for the frangipani tree, it’s now the centrepiece for the spacious outdoor zone, ensuring vibrant flowers and a sweet fragrance for many years to come.
The HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards – one of the country’s most talked-about events in the industry – will conclude the three-day HIA National Conference in Melbourne on 15-17 May.
