Binet Homes has come a long way since it launched in 1965. Now celebrating its 60th anniversary, its founder Peter Binet has experienced the evolution of residential building over the years. One of his most valuable skills has been selecting employees who are well-skilled and long-lasting – many have been with the company for more than four decades.
For instance, Patrick Dorahy, the firm’s Construction Manager, first joined the business as a young apprentice in 1997. He now collaborates closely with Peter to undertake intricate builds, such as the grand farmhouse-style residence that won the 2025 HIA Australian Spec Home Award in May.
This residence is part of the picturesque Alcorn Mews Estate in Pitt Town, a 45-minute drive from Sydney’s CBD, which comprises nine house-and land packages on blocks exceeding 2000 square metres.
Positioned at the end of a cul-de-sac, the Spec Home winner embodies modern elegance with a touch of rural grandeur. Peter and his team successfully created a Palm Springs-inspired residence featuring neutral and olive tones, brass fittings, and an abundance of natural light. High, raked ceilings and expansive hallways contribute to its spacious ambience, culminating in an expansive skylight positioned above the roofline for visual impact.
‘It’s a real point of difference,’ says Peter. ‘The roof is hand-cut by our carpenters, allowing more complex designs and durable structures.’
The Binet team employs traditional building techniques, including timber frame, brick veneer, and full brick construction.
Inside, a showpiece kitchen boasts an expansive Caesarstone island and a butler’s pantry. Its spacious bedrooms, luxurious bathrooms, and home theatre add grandeur. An additional feature is a built-in popcorn machine positioned outside the home cinema – a fun element that appealed to new owners.
A seamless indoor/outdoor living experience provides a covered patio with a sparkling swimming pool. ‘The pool is visible from the front door, creating a luxurious resort-style atmosphere,’ explains Peter.
‘We’ve also recognised the importance of multigenerational living, so we added a granny flat,’ explains Patrick, who positioned it next to the tennis court. ‘It provides flexibility as it may be used as a home office or a residence for the parents’ adult children.’
A final touch of indulgence is the expansive garage, designed to accommodate a caravan or small boat. ‘This is ideal for grey nomads, as it provides a secure space for their van,’ says Peter.
In May, Peter, Patrick and the team were thrilled when they received the HIA Australian Spec Home award at the 2025 HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards.
‘This is a reward for the whole team,’ says 85-year-old Peter. ‘At Binet Homes, we emphasise the importance of teamwork, and this project illustrates that principle. Constructing homes is impossible without dedicated people and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our devoted staff and longstanding contractors for transforming this project into reality.’
