Tanik Design was nominated for the prestigious 2025 HIA Australian Bathroom Design award, and adding to her excitement was the presence of her clients, who had travelled to attend the event alongside her.
‘The celebration of the win was certainly amplified by the fact that my clients happened to be in Melbourne that weekend,’ says Tania. ‘We were fortunate to share some of the celebrations together that night with my husband and my clients. While they hadn’t travelled specifically for the awards, it felt like it was meant to be – and the win made the occasion all the more special.'
Thoughtful spatial planning and a clever contrast between light and dark materials add drama and dimension to this bathroom. It features curved fluted mosaic walls, and striking Dekton-clad walls, floor and vanities that are framed by arched steel mirrors.
One of the biggest challenges was working with curved walls, which demanded precise execution and custom detailing. Installing large-format sheets while maintaining the required falls added another layer of complexity, especially in wet areas.
The use of large-format Dekton sheets allowed for a quicker wall-lining process while also reducing grout lines and junctions. ‘This created a clean, seamless finish,’ says Tania. ‘Custom joinery integrates effortlessly with the wall and floor linings.’
Relocating plumbing to a first-floor interior space also presented unexpected difficulties, requiring careful coordination to avoid disrupting structural elements and services below. ‘All of this had to be accomplished within an extremely tight timeline, making scheduling and problem-solving even more demanding,’ says Tania.
After completing the project, entering the HIA Awards program was a natural next step. ‘The greatest pride comes from the recognition of industry peers – the acknowledgment of our long hours, precision and craftsmanship that went into this project,’ says Tania. 'It’s wonderful to receive recognition, especially under the HIA’s banner. It’s a reminder that the passion and persistence truly made an impact.'
According to the HIA judges, this on-point bathroom maximises functionality while enhancing the visual harmony of the overall space. The result is a practical room elevated into a work of art.
And the clients feel the impact every day. ‘The clients tell me it’s their sanctuary – like living in a six-star resort,’ Tania says with a laugh. ‘That’s what makes me proud: knowing I’ve made a real difference to their lifestyle. I couldn’t ask for more.’
