Cobb and Co Projects’ master ensuite blends luxury finishes, clever spatial design and bushland-inspired ambience, all showing how thoughtful planning can transform a limited space into an extraordinary retreat.
Morning light filters through louvred windows, spilling across travertine tiles and catching the glint of gold fixtures. Outside, the gumtrees sway gently, their colours mirrored in the soft green of the feature wall tiles. The air is warm and scented from the timber-lined aromatherapy shower. This one-of-kind ensuite – more a hidden sanctuary – is located in Brisbane’s suburb of Springwood.
‘We designed a master retreat that captures and complements the bushland surrounding the home,’ explains Daniel Cobanov, builder and owner of Cobb and Co Projects.
This small but strategic extension seamlessly links into the existing ensuite zone, which desperately needed a rethink. Sophisticated elements include a travertine-tiled walkway, personal storage nook, seated make-up station with backlit arched mirror, and an elegant pendant light.
The centrepiece is a multifunctional double shower and aromatherapy steam room with a floating stone bench seat, flanked by a double vanity and privacy-screened toilet. Beyond, a custom-designed walk-in robe offers seating, generous storage and warm timber accents. The renovation brought its share of challenges.
‘The original idea was to create a much larger extension,’ Daniel says. ‘However, we were restricted by boundary setbacks and nature overlays on the property. The extension had to be much smaller and narrower than planned. Rather than seeing that as a negative, we took it as an opportunity to get creative.’
The solution maximised space without sacrificing comfort, and even allowed the existing plumbing layout to remain largely intact.
Every finish was chosen for its ability to enhance both the sensory and functional experience of the room. ‘We chose the Quinten Pearl travertine matt tile as a contrast to the cooler tones of the Quinten Ice tile used in the rest of the home,’ Daniel says.
‘The Pavilion Gumleaf Gloss square tiles in the shower pick up the colours of the gumtrees outside, and the Cairo Carrara tumbled mosaic in the make-up nook adds a touch of luxury.’ The palette is grounded in Ottoman Grey stone, Tasmanian oak, and Agave Polytec cabinetry, tying each element back to its natural ambience.
‘Storage and space were major requests for this project,’ Daniel says. ‘By introducing different levels and depths, open bench areas, seating with storage underneath, plus mirrors and windows, the walk-in robe is generous with plenty of smart storage.’
Winner of Bathroom of the Year at the 2024 HIA Brisbane Kitchen & Bathroom Awards, this Queensland project reflects Cobb and Co Projects’ philosophy. ‘As a small, local building firm, we put so much heart into what we do,’ Daniel says.
‘Winning this award means a lot – not just for me and this project. It’s a reflection of our whole team and all the work we do.'
