Inspired by memories of a childhood spent in the country, this award-winning Darwin home blends nostalgic warmth with modern luxury, delivering seamless indoor-outdoor living tailored to the Territory climate.

For the client behind the Changsha Residence in Darwin, the brief was deeply personal. She longed for a home that echoed the warmth and innocence of her childhood in the country, yet delivered the comfort of contemporary living in the Top End. That vision has now been realised by McT Design & Construction, with the project claiming Home of the Year, Custom Built Home and Residential Design at the 2025 HIA Northern Territory Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards.

McT Design & Construction has been building in Darwin for 21 years with a small and dedicated team of Director Tom McCullough, Construction Manager Warren Gibb and Inhouse Designer Dennis Silva. The passion behind the project shaped every decision – the client wanted that sense of comfort and familiarity, while still embracing technology and contemporary finishes.
McT Design & Construction built and designed this stunning Darwin home.
Winner of numerous HIA awards, including the 2025 HIA NT Home of the Year award.

The result is a 620-square-metre, U-shaped residence designed to wrap around the pool and landscaped outdoor areas, creating both privacy and connection. The four-bedroom home ensures each bedroom includes a walk-in robe, while the master suite enjoys its own private wing complete with a freestanding bath ensuite and an adjoining gym. A guest bedroom wing overlooks the pool, and generous additional spaces include a cinema, home office and large laundry.

Central to the design is an expansive open-plan living, dining and kitchen zone with a butler’s pantry. These areas have been positioned to blend indoor and outdoor entertaining, flowing seamlessly to the verandah, pool and surrounding landscape. ‘The emphasis on the floorplan was open-plan living that connects with the outdoors,’ Tom says. ‘In Darwin’s climate, living inside and out is everything.’

Achieving a six-star energy rating, the home balances aesthetic warmth with robust construction. Acrylic rendered masonry block and steel frame construction form the structure, complemented by Australian hardwood timber trusses and a Colorbond steel roof.

Acoustic wall and ceiling linings to the cinema ensure comfort and performance.

Internally, large-format tiles extend from the main floor through to the outdoor verandah and pathways. Australian spotted gum ceilings and timber inserts introduce warmth, while local bluestone cladding to the facade and gatehouse anchors the modern country style.

The kitchen features 60mm stone benchtops, with complementary stone finishes carried through the butler’s pantry, bathrooms and laundry. Two-pack shaker-style cabinetry enhances the timeless aesthetic, while a 12mm porcelain benchtop and splashback define the outdoor kitchen.

Acoustic insulation to internal walls, along with acoustic wall and ceiling linings to the cinema, ensure comfort and performance. Ducted air-conditioning services the master wing, main living areas and guest wing, with split systems installed in the office, gym and cinema. A fully integrated home automation system allows remote control of HVAC, lighting, security, motorised window furnishings, pool systems, gates and audiovisual components.

Importantly, the client was actively involved throughout construction. ‘She had the opportunity to make changes along the way to ensure her vision came to fruition,’ Tom says. ‘Allowing those refinements without unnecessarily delaying construction was key to the success of the project.’

‘In Darwin’s climate, living inside and out is everything,’ says Tom McCullough.
A shaded swimming pool, verandah and surrounding landscape were must-haves.

One of the technical challenges was site stormwater drainage. With block falls set away from the street and no available stormwater connection, the team engineered a solution incorporating sub-soil drainage and dry creek beds draining to pits, with stormwater pumped back to the street.

HIA judges praised the project for its ‘outstanding design and quality craftsmanship’, highlighting the spacious U-shaped layout, wide passageways and seamless integration of technology. They commended the large-format tiles, feature timberwork and the abundance of natural light and ventilation.

In addition to the Changsha Residence wins, McT Design & Construction also secured the Specialised Housing award for a separate project. That home was recognised for creating a warm, community-focused environment within a supportive village setting, demonstrating the same commitment to quality, accessibility and thoughtful design.

For the McT team, the accolades affirm two decades of dedication to building in the Territory. But for their client, the Changsha Residence is something even more meaningful: a modern country sanctuary that feels, unmistakably, like home.
