High-performance design meets family business values at Blue Eco Homes, where Passivhaus thinking and bushfire resilience shape every project.
In the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Blue Eco Homes has built a reputation for combining building science, sustainability and strong family values.

Founded in 2003 by Managing Director Joe Mercieca, the family-owned business specialises in custom homes designed to Passivhaus and other high-performance standards. Its work focuses on energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and bushfire-resilient construction, which is critical in the Blue Mountains environment.

Winner of the 2026 HIA Australian Professional Small Builder/Renovator award, Blue Eco Homes operates with a core team of five staff, supported by around 65 trade contractors. Joe believes the company’s success lies in its integrated approach.

‘We look at the whole system from materials and airtightness through to ventilation and bushfire protection,’ he explains. ‘Clients come to us because they want a home that performs well for decades.’

The company has developed its own construction innovation, the FAB-FYV a panelised wall system, designed in-house to achieve high airtightness and thermal performance while improving build efficiency and reducing waste. The company regularly verifies performance using blower door testing and indoor air-quality monitoring, sharing results transparently with clients.

Family leadership remains central to the business. Joe works alongside his wife/Business Manager Merylese. Daughter Beth Mercieca, who won the 2023 HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice award, manages operations and site leadership.

Today, Blue Eco Homes has a clear goal: continuing to raise the bar for sustainable, resilient housing while staying true to the values that built the business.
