“Hellyar Design + Construct has demonstrated innovation in this important area and is to be applauded on this dual occupancy project titled the 'Bianca and Nera Villas'. The homes were designed and constructed with HIA GreenSmart principles in mind so that future property owners can enjoy the ongoing operational and environmental rewards of sustainable living,” said HIA Hunter Executive Director, Craig Jennion.
The HIA GreenSmart House accreditation was awarded to the two villas designed and constructed with numerous energy and water saving initiatives such as solar passive design, well designed cross ventilation for passive cooling, LED lighting, an energy efficient hot water system, and a rainwater tank connected to toilets and the washing machine amongst many other sustainable features.
One of the outstanding features of the homes are the large number of skylights that have been installed to take advantage of the natural lighting and passive solar heating throughout the year. These are used in combination with blinds, fans and sliding doors to zone off rooms to reduce areas required to be artificially heated or cooled.
“The result is a house that goes beyond mandated BASIX requirements and ensures the needs of the occupants can be met now and into the future,” Mr Jennion said.
“Demonstrating environmental responsibility was really important for this project. That’s why we carefully ordered building materials, reused elements for landscaping features and selected environmentally preferable materials and paints,” said Karl Hellyar, Director, Hellyar Design + Construct.
“We are proud to respond to the consumer demand for not only well-built homes but importantly sustainable homes that are liveable and more comfortable,” Mr Hellyar added.

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) welcomes the release of BuildSkills Australia’s Housing Workforce Capacity Study, which highlights the need to strengthen Australia’s residential construction workforce to meet the National Housing Accord target of 1.2 million new homes by 2029.
“Trade shortages loom as a major threat to reaching the Housing Accord target of building 1.2million homes by 2029,” said HIA Executive Director - Future Workforce, Mike Hermon.
“The Victorian government’s Housing Statement is approaching its two-year anniversary. Since that time the Victorian government has implemented some positive reforms, but it is becoming clear that we will not have enough people to build these homes as quickly as we need,” stated HIA Executive Director Victoria, Keith Ryan.
With the focus of the national economic debate on improving productivity following the recent roundtable, HIA used our submission to the Productivity Commission’s Five Pillars reforms to call on the Federal Government to act swiftly to lift productivity and unlock new housing supply.
