The ABS building approvals data, broken down to local government area level, has Clarence approving 291 dwellings in the 2025/26 financial year. That put it ahead of Launceston on 217 and Glenorchy on 205, and clear of Hobart on 197.
The result was driven by a mix of housing types. Clarence approved 268 detached houses and 23 apartments over the year.
"Clarence has come out on top for new home approvals this year, and that's a good result for the area," HIA Executive Director Tasmania Benjamin Price said.
"These aren't just numbers on a spreadsheet. Every one of these approvals is a family closer to a place to live, and a local builder with work on the books.
"The real test is what happens next. Approvals are the first step, but we need those homes finished and people living in them, and we need this kept up year on year."
