The Age after an investigation is reporting “that large numbers of fraudulent building industry training and qualification certificates have allegedly been issued by scam and criminal networks over the past four years."
“The Victorian construction industry has been here before with serious allegations being published and no immediate response from government,” said Mr Ryan.
“In mid-2024 The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald started publishing the Building Bad series about alleged corruption, misconduct and regulatory failures in the construction industry.
“It took the Victorian government over two years to finally accept the seriousness of the allegations and establish a credible independent investigation – the Royal Commission.
“These stories in the meantime damaged the credibility of the construction industry. Despite the allegations being not applicable to significant segments of the industry, including the detached and low-rise home building industry.
“The Victorian government must not repeat this mistake. An independent inquiry into these allegations must commence immediately and the government must be transparent about what actions will be underway now to respond to these allegations.
“There are reputable and long-established safety training providers in the construction industry who will be troubled by what has been published today. They along with the rest of the construction industry deserve an immediate response from the Victorian government,” concluded Mr Ryan.
