Detached house approvals rose 11.9 per cent in 2025/26 to 2,488. Multi-unit approvals more than doubled, up 111.1 per cent to 247.
“These are encouraging numbers, but they’re rising off a low base,” said HIA Executive Director Tasmania, Benjamin Price.
“The lift in multi-unit approvals looks big in percentage terms because we started from so few. In real numbers we’re still nowhere near what we need to see supply meet demand.”
The June quarter was a genuine bright spot. Detached approvals rose 22.4 per cent over the quarter to 672, which is 46.4 per cent higher than the same quarter a year earlier.
“A strong quarter tells us the industry can respond when the conditions are right. Much of this has emerged likely thanks to momentum with interest rate cuts last year, turning up in Building Approvals data in early-to-mid 2026,” Mr Price said.
“The task now is turning approvals into homes people can actually live in. Approvals are the first step, not the finish line, and commencements still have ground to make up.”
HIA continues to call for planning reform and infrastructure investment to keep the pipeline moving.
