The HIA Housing 100, sponsored by COLORBOND® steel, ranks Australia's largest 100 residential builders by the number of homes they commence each year. In Tasmania, those builders started 896 homes in 2025/26, up from 624 the year before.
"Tasmania's largest builders now account for more than a third of everything being built in this state, up from about a quarter a year earlier," Mr Price said.
"When the conditions are right, our builders build. That's the real story in these numbers."
Across Tasmania, 2,499 new dwellings were commenced in 2025/26. Wilson Homes, part of the NEX Building Group, was the largest builder operating in the state with 435 starts.
Mr Price said the figures reflected conditions that have since turned.
"There's always a lag between someone signing a contract and a slab going down. What we're seeing today is last year's confidence.
"Nobody should read this as the housing shortage easing. The demand for new homes hasn't gone away, but the pipeline is shrinking."
He said the result showed the industry could deliver when the settings allowed it.
"The capacity is there, but the constraint is what it costs to get a home out of the ground in Tasmania."
