“The annual report ranks Australia’s top 100 builders by the number of homes commenced and highlights the significant contribution Hunter companies make to housing supply in New South Wales and nationally.”
Leading the local results, NEX Building Group commenced 3,585 homes in 2025/26, moving from fourth to third among Australia’s largest home builders. Its 3,491 detached-home starts also made it the nation’s second-largest detached house builder.
NEX Building Group, trading predominantly in New South Wales as McDonald Jones Homes and MOJO Homes, commenced 1,742 homes in the state, including 1,726 detached houses. This placed the group second overall in New South Wales and first for detached house starts among the state’s largest builders.
Heatherbrae-based Hunter Homes rose to equal 53rd nationally with 245 starts, up from 138 in the previous financial year—an increase of almost 78 per cent. In a significant move they were also ranked the 15th largest builder in New South Wales.
Belmont-based Montgomery Homes was ranked 80th nationally, commencing 151 homes in 2025/26.
“It is a fantastic achievement to see three Hunter-based builders recognised on the national stage. Their results were in response to improving market conditions, that saw new home approvals increase 5 per cent across the Hunter and Central Coast in 2025/26”.
“Looking forward these results demonstrate the capability within our region and provide confidence that local builders are ready to respond as demand for new homes grows,” concluded Mr Jennion.
Key highlights from the HIA Housing 100 2025/26, sponsored by COLORBOND® steel, show that Australia’s largest 100 residential builders:
- Commenced 70,553 homes, up 9.4 per cent from 64,481 in 2024/25.
- Accounted for 35 per cent of Australia’s new home market.
- Increased detached house starts by 11 per cent to 52,058.
- Increased semi-detached dwelling starts by 14 per cent to 7,397.
- Increased multi-unit starts by 1 per cent to 11,098.
Almost two-thirds of businesses in the Housing 100 increased their output during 2025/26. Detached homes remained the largest share of activity at 74 per cent, while nine new entrants joined the national ranking.
