McArdle Projects won GreenSmart Renovation / Addition Project for transforming a previously dilapidated 1920s cottage into an all-electric home. The renovation improved the performance of the existing building and is complemented by a modern extension employing passive solar design and thermal mass.
Adelaide Green Homes won GreenSmart Display/Project Home for their 7.1 star energy efficient Hendrie display home. Materials used in the home were carefully selected based on local supply, recycled content and end-of-life recycling. Utilising cross-flow ventilation, it captures prevailing breezes with optimal window placements. Automatic high-set windows let hot air out in summer and lower set windows bring cooler air in.
Victoria builder Ovens & King Builders won three awards including the highest accolade -the 2021HIA Australian GreenSmart Home for a one-bedroom homebuilt to the Passive House standard. The home was also awarded the HIA Australian GreenSmart Custom Built Home and HIA Australian GreenSmart Energy Efficiency.
The judges were impressed by the standard of construction by Ovens & King Builders to achieve a comfortable home year-round with minimal energy consumption.
“Material choice reflects the overall high quality of construction and demonstrate a passion for sustainable building, ”they commented.
Winners from around Australia were recognised for their contribution to sustainable building practices.
In congratulating the winners, HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe said HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards represent the latest in environmental design excellence and sustainable building practices, and recognise HIA members who design and build greener and more liveable homes.
“HIA is committed to sustainable building outcomes through environmentally focussed design, innovation and construction. The winners and finalists are at the cutting-edge in their field and demonstrate expertise and commitment to build superior performing, energy-saving homes for their clients,” Mr Wolfe said.
“Each winner and finalist is congratulated for achieving success at a national level and demonstrating that comfort, security, innovation and value for money can co-exist in a sustainable built environment. HIA members are up to the challenge.”
The HIA GreenSmart program began more than 20 years ago and is a voluntary initiative available to HIA members.

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) is calling on the Victorian Government to abandon its proposed legislation that would create a legislated right to work from home, warning the changes would impose additional regulatory pressure on businesses already struggling.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has called for a three-month extension of the fuel excise relief and pause on heavy vehicle road user charges that lapse on 30 June, which risk triggering another round of housing materials cost increases.
“Today’s HIA Feasibility Forum highlighted that significant changes are needed to make new housing projects stack up,” said Brad Armitage HIA Executive Director NSW.
“HIA estimates that Australia needed to build more than 250,000 homes last year just to keep pace with demand growth and begin reducing the housing shortage. Instead, we commenced construction of just 196,000 homes. That gap is why housing affordability continues to deteriorate," stated Tim Reardon, HIA's Chief Economist.
