Scott James Builder has won the prestigious 2022 HIA Northern Victoria Home of the Year award for an impressive custom-built home overlooking Albury’s CBD.
The result was announced at the 2022 HIA Northern Victoria Regional Housing Awards, held at the Atura Albury Hotel on Friday 2 September.
In bestowing this honour, HIA’s judges recognised the expertise displayed by the builder, and the challenges that were overcome, in designing and building this home on a steeply sloping block.
The site falls over 20 metres from front to rear, but a clever floor plan and expert management on the part of the builder has delivered a home that celebrates its location to the fullest. The home enjoys fantastic views, and all trades have completed their work to the highest standards.
“This home is very much a testament to the skill and knowledge of the builder,” says Fiona Nield, HIA Regional Executive Director. “Scott and his team have designed and built an absolutely outstanding home, expertly solving a number of technical challenges. HIA congratulates the entire Scott James Builder team on this well-deserved accolade.”
In addition to 2022 HIA Northern Victoria Home of the Year, this project also won Scott James Builder the Custom Built Home of the Year, Custom Built Home over $2 million and Outdoor Project awards.

A number of other builders were also recognised on the night. Hadar Homes received Display Home of the Year honours for their Manhattan 34 display in Leneva.
Albury-based B&H Homes won Project Home of the Year for a striking off-grid home in Staghorn Flat, as well as awards in the custom built home and kitchen categories. Excelcon received Spec Home of the Year honours for a fantastic contemporary home in Mansfield.
R&R Quality Homes from Wangaratta won several awards in the custom built home, small commercial project, kitchen and bathroom categories. Ovens & King Builders, also from Wangaratta, won the GreenSmart Sustainable Home award as well as a custom built home category.
Garraway Developments were winners in the specialised housing, kitchen and display home categories. Simonds Homes and Jason Wescott Builder were also winners, in the display and custom built home categories respectively.
“The HIA Awards are a showcase of the best of the best in the residential building industry, and of the absolutely outstanding quality of work done by HIA members” says Ms Nield. “The homes recognised in the 2022 HIA Northern Victoria Regional Housing Awards are exceptional, and HIA congratulates all of the winners and finalists.”

Building approvals for dwellings in Canberra for the year to the end of March have shown some signs that the market may be turning the corner but still remain well below government targets.
“Australia has just seen its two weakest years of new home commencements in over a decade, meaning these ongoing shortages of skilled trades are not being caused by home building activity,” stated HIA Chief Economist, Tim Reardon.
“There were 48,620 new homes approved for construction in the first quarter of 2025, up by 20.8 per cent on a year earlier,” stated HIA Senior Economist Tom Devitt.
“The Housing Industry Association (HIA) calls on the newly elected Federal Government to make housing a first-order priority from day one, any delay or political grandstanding will only deepen the nation’s housing crisis,” HIA Managing Director Jocelyn Martin said today.
