The winning renovation uses more than 80 per cent less energy than the average Canberra home and generates much more energy than it uses. Blackburn House treads lightly on the environment and demonstrates the rejuvenating possibilities of many tired and uncomfortable houses across the country.
Using solar passive principles and thermal performance modelling, the energy efficiency score was raised from three stars to a 7.7-star NatHERS rating. The incredibly comfortable, energy-efficient family home is now all-electric with a 10.4kWh PV system.
NSW builder Blue Eco Homes won the highest accolade - the 2022 HIA Australian GreenSmart Home, partnered by NatHERS, with the home also being awarded the HIA Australian GreenSmart Custom Built Home, partnered by COLORBOND steel.
Blue Eco Homes’ winning home integrates architectural expression with sustainable building practices. Built to Passive House standards, it also boasts bushfire protection and prevention systems, surpassing regulatory requirements.
HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise the best in sustainable housing. Award winners and finalists make a positive difference to the environment by building energy efficient and comfortable homes.
In congratulating the winners, HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe said HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise HIA members who design and build greener homes – homes that deliver the latest in environmental design excellence and sustainable building practices.
“HIA’s commitment to sustainable building outcomes through environmentally focussed design, innovation and construction has not altered over the 22 years the HIA GreenSmart program has been running. Now more than ever, our members are showing that comfort, security, innovation and value for money can co-exist in a sustainable built environment.”
“Each winner and finalist is congratulated for achieving success at a national level. They are at the cutting-edge in their field and demonstrate commitment to build energy-saving homes for their clients,” Mr Wolfe concluded.
The HIA GreenSmart program began more than 22 years ago and is a voluntary initiative available to HIA members.
