The winning home has a determined focus on solar passive design, sustainable material choices and thoughtful building practices; ensuring the multi-generational dwelling boasts an impressive 9.3-star NatHERS rating.
To suit its sub-tropical climate and coastal location, cross-ventilation is maximised, with the central garden atrium drawing breezes into the home from all directions. Combined with raked ceilings and high windows to allow warm air to escape, a comfortable internal temperature is guaranteed even on the warmest Queensland days.
HIA Australian GreenSmart Sustainable Home is partnered by Dulux and recognises the best in environmentally-responsible housing. Award winners and finalists make a positive difference to the environment by building sustainable, energy efficient and comfortable homes.
Ovens & King Builders from Victoria were awarded a highly commended for their one-bedroom dwelling with an industrial-inspired design that is a model of sustainable and energy-efficient construction.
New South Wales sustainable builder Blue Eco Homes won three awards including the highest accolade - the 2022 HIA Australian GreenSmart Home for a low-impact, environmentally and ecologically considerate development that integrates architectural expression with sustainable building practices. The home was also awarded the HIA Australian GreenSmart Custom Built Home, partnered by COLORBOND steel. Blue Eco Homes’ Joe Mercieca also won HIA Australian GreenSmart Professional, partnered by HIA Insurance Services.
Winners from around Australia were recognised for their contribution to sustainable building practices.
In congratulating the winners, HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe said HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise HIA members who design and build greener homes – homes that deliver the latest in environmental design excellence and sustainable building practices.
“HIA’s commitment to sustainable building outcomes through environmentally focussed design, innovation and construction has not altered over the 22 years the HIA GreenSmart program has been running. Now more than ever, our members are showing that comfort, security, innovation and value for money can co-exist in a sustainable built environment.”
“Each winner and finalist is congratulated for achieving success at a national level. They are at the cutting-edge in their field and demonstrate commitment to build energy-saving homes for their clients,” Mr Wolfe concluded.
The HIA GreenSmart program began more than 22 years ago and is a voluntary initiative available to HIA members.

“Australia’s population reached 27.4 million by the end of 2024, up by 445,900 people, or 1.7 per cent for the year,” stated HIA Senior Economist, Tom Devitt.
The Tasmanian election that no-one wanted to have is in full swing, and while the limited campaign period is unlikely to provide the usual platform to promote key policies and reforms, HIA is calling on both major parties to prioritise housing policies given the significant challenges across the state.
“Our dated and complex planning system is littered with speed bumps that could easily be removed”, said Brad Armitage, HIA NSW Executive Director.
“The Victorian government’s proposal to update home building contract laws to make them fit for use in the 21st century is welcomed by HIA,” stated HIA Executive Director, Keith Ryan.
