Torbul Hill House is an off-grid self-sufficient, highly detailed home of timber, stone and polished concrete which attracts exceptional passive solar gains from its hilltop location. HIA Australian GreenSmart Energy Efficiency is partnered by Vantage Windows & Doors by AWS and recognise the best in environmentally-responsible housing. Award winners and finalists make a positive difference to the environment by building sustainable, energy efficient and comfortable homes.
New South Wales sustainable builder Blue Eco Homes won three awards including the highest accolade - the 2022 HIA Australian GreenSmart Home for a low-impact, environmentally and ecologically considerate development that integrates architectural expression with sustainable building practices. The home was also awarded the HIA Australian GreenSmart Custom Built Home, partnered by COLORBOND steel. Blue Eco Homes’ Joe Mercieca also won HIA Australian GreenSmart Professional, partnered by HIA Insurance Services.
Winners from around Australia were recognised for their contribution to sustainable building practices.
In congratulating the winners, HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe said HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise HIA members who design and build greener homes – homes that deliver the latest in environmental design excellence and sustainable building practices.
“HIA’s commitment to sustainable building outcomes through environmentally focussed design, innovation and construction has not altered over the 22 years the HIA GreenSmart program has been running. Now more than ever, our members are showing that comfort, security, innovation and value for money can co-exist in a sustainable built environment.”
“Each winner and finalist is congratulated for achieving success at a national level. They are at the cutting-edge in their field and demonstrate commitment to build energy-saving homes for their clients,” Mr Wolfe concluded.
The HIA GreenSmart program began more than 22 years ago and is a voluntary initiative available to HIA members.

New rules add thousands to the cost of a new home as Tasmania falls years behind on housing
From today, every new home built in Tasmania must meet the full Livable Housing Design requirements. The Housing Industry Association says this adds thousands of dollars to the cost of building a home, at a time when Tasmanians can least afford it.
Rules for managing the risk of falls have changed - are you up to date?
Changes to Western Australia's requirements for managing the risks of falls will commence on 1 October 2026, introducing new expectations for builders, contractors and workers undertaking tasks where there is a risk of falling.
Livable Housing Design: final stage now in force
As of today, 1 October 2026, all new building work in Tasmania, unless exempt, must comply with all requirements of Part H8 Livable Housing Design of NCC Volume Two.
ACT housing approvals slump puts 2030 target under pressure
“The ACT’s housing supply pipeline is weakening, with building approvals in the three months to August halving compared with a year earlier,” said HIA Executive Director ACT and Southern NSW, Geordan Murray.
