Winners were unveiled before 550 industry leaders on 20 May at the prestigious residential building industry awards ceremony on Hamilton Island.
Averna Homes won HIA Australian Spec Home for a three-storey home that incorporates luxe natural finishes sourced from across the globe to imbue a truly bespoke ambience.
The judges were impressed by the high-end workmanship on the impeccably detailed architectural features, such as the recessed ceilings, bulkheads and joinery throughout the home. The category is partnered by Stratco.
Jethro Urwin from Apex WA Carpentry Solutions was named the HIA Australian Apprentice Host Trainer for always encouraging his apprentices to work to the high standards of the business. Jethro’s apprentices feel genuinely valued, acknowledging him as a great boss and mentor.
The Rural Building Company won HIA Australian Project Home, partnered by The Australian Reinforcing Company, for an impressive ranch-style home that emanates rustic charm and sets the scene for relaxed, contemporary rural living in southern Western Australia.
The coveted HIA Australian Professional Small Builder / Renovator was won by Ultimo Constructions. The judges applauded the business for their ability to pivot to the challenges presented over the last two years particularly the level of resilience and flexibility of the staff as they adapt to the changing landscape.
This is the fourth time Ultimo Constructions have won this national award. The category is partnered by Companion Systems.
HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe said the HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards recognise the best in Australia’s residential building industry.

The HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards allow us to acknowledge their skill and their commitment to quality in design, material selection and construction. Our Awards’ program brings together members who excel in building exceptional homes, kitchens and bathrooms and run highly successful businesses.
“HIA Award winners build with exceptional workmanship; demonstrated in projects that push the boundaries in design and innovation. It is my absolute pleasure to congratulate each winner for their hard work and commitment to excellence,” Mr Wolfe added.
Tasmania’s Lane Group Construction won the highest residential building award bestowed each year, winning the 2023 HIA-CSR Australian Home of the Year for a spectacular cliff-hugging property anchored to its windswept, bushland location by heavyset stone pavilions and described by HIA judges as ‘a once-in-a-lifetime build for Tasmania’.
An abundance of floor-length glass windows create a serene atmosphere for the owners and their guests to enjoy, connecting them to the magnificent, rugged coastline of the Derwent River from all public and private living areas.
The layout includes the master suite, four additional bedrooms, billiards room and library – complete with a concealed lift to access the underground wine cellar and tunnel that opens out onto the rocks below.
The home also won HIA Australian Custom Built Home, partnered by ActronAir.
The HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards are the ultimate platform to showcase the talents of the nation’s top builders and designers. Winners are selected from state-based finalists, with awards in 23 separate categories. The Awards are partnered by leading building products company CSR.
