HIA awards Australian Apprentice of the Year

Media release

HIA awards Australian Apprentice of the Year

Media release
Tasmanian carpentry apprentice Oliver Burnell was announced as Australia’s top apprentice for the year at the 2024 HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards in Cairns on Saturday night.

Oliver won the 2024 HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice; as a testimony to his commitment and passion for the building industry.

Oliver's professionalism, meticulous attention to detail, and pride in his work reflect his deep commitment to representing his employer Ronald Young + Co Builders in the best possible way.

Following the completion of an accounting degree, Oliver’s journey is an example of the many different ways people can enter into an apprenticeship and a career in construction. Since starting his apprenticeship, Oliver estimates he has worked on over 60 different houses.

This award not only celebrates Oliver's experience but also highlights the hard work and commitment of all apprentices in the construction industry.

HIA recognised all HIA’s Regional Apprentices of the Year at the event acknowledging them as aspiring tradespeople of tomorrow. With the industry in dire need of qualified trades, these apprentices are excellent examples of success.

"It's truly inspiring to see such dedication and passion across the board. Apprentices like Oliver Burnell are the future of our industry. We need to be proud of their accomplishments and those employers who take time out of their business to support and train them,” Ms Martin concluded.
