Western Australian builder wins national sustainable housing award

Media release
Western Australia’s INKA Builders won HIA Australian GreenSmart Multi Dwelling Development at the prestigious 2024 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards announced today in Hobart.

The sustainable townhouse development in Hamilton Hill epitomises innovation and eco-conscious design.

Built with locally sourced timber frames, prefabricated offsite, the seven double-storey homes achieve a 7-star NatHERS rating, prioritising environmental impact. Each home features a 3.5kW Solar PV system, Solargain roof-mounted 300L hot water unit with electric booster, and efficient tapware and appliances.

The intricate blend of materials and textures elevates the aesthetic allure, a harmony of sophistication with sustainability. The judge’s commented that INKA Builders have created a cost and space-effective development which showcases good thermal performance and thoughtful design choices. The category is partnered by Bondor.

The 2024 HIA Australian GreenSmart Home – the highest accolade presented at the 2024 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards – was won by 360 Building Solutions and Light House ArchiScience from ACT/SNSW for a house located in the heart of suburban Canberra. Oska’s House reimagines the classic red brick home, blending tradition with modern innovation. Using solar passive principles and NatHERS energy modelling, the floor plan was optimised to create a new family home with more functional space and better flow and connection.

Despite its relatively small footprint this home pays attention to the basics, showing what can be done with good design, good detailing and quality construction.

HIA Managing Director Jocelyn Martin said HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise HIA members who deliver the latest in environmental design excellence and sustainable building practices.

“HIA is committed to sustainable building outcomes through environmentally focussed design, innovation and construction. Our commitment to recognise excellence has not altered over the 24 years the HIA GreenSmart program has been running. The winners and finalists are at the cutting-edge in their field and demonstrate expertise in building superior performing, energy-saving homes for their clients.

“Each winner and finalist is congratulated for achieving success at a national level,” concluded Ms Martin.
