HIA WA Executive Director, Michael McGowan praised all the entrants for the outstanding quality and diversity of homes that continue to be built throughout regional Western Australia.
“Despite the ongoing challenges of trade shortages particularly effecting regional areas, builders continue to display a focus on quality workmanship across a range of building materials and methods. This flexibility provides for a variety of design outcomes, price points, and lifestyle related products, and for some of the most interesting homes in the state,” said Mr McGowan.
Awarded HIA-CSR South West Home of the Year, for the second year in a row, Dunsborough builder Tallwood Custom Built Homes’ project in Quindalup is a double storey permanent residence delivered to an exceptional level of quality and design that captures the incredible views of Geographe Bay.
With living areas and master bedroom on the upper floor, the home is designed to maximise the setting. A lift provides easy access to the living areas. PV cells and battery storage provide efficient use of energy and are supplemented by double glazed windows and hydronic underfloor heating to make this home a comfortable and efficient home for the coastal setting.
“The judges commended the exceptional build quality and attention to detail of finish and materials, including custom features and work with a local furniture designer for the installation of custom cabinetry in the master bedroom and living areas,” said Mr McGowan.
Other notable results in the South West included ProLiving Design and Construction for their beautiful Yallingup home winning Residential Design of the Year. An incredible reimagining of a dairy in Cowaramup by Caves Road Constructions to win Renovation / Addition Project of the Year. Wilde Design & Build winning Innovation in Housing of the Year for a beautiful Barrabup home. And The Rural Building Company for a stunning Gelorup display home taking out the Golden Key Award for South West Display Home of the Year.
In the Great Southern, WA Country Builders were awarded HIA-CSR Great Southern Home of the Year for a project home that perfectly complements its picturesque setting in Kalgan. The four-bedroom family home is perfectly suited to relaxed regional living with expansive verandas, a porch directly off the master suite, and a vast outdoor living space.
“Judges were particularly impressed with the master suite featuring a spacious dressing room, well-appointed ensuite, and serene parents retreat.
“The home radiates warmth and tranquillity, includes a dedicated "relaxation" room featuring raked ceilings and invites residents to unwind and recharge in harmony with the home’s natural setting."
WA Country Builders also took out Project Home of the Year for the Kalgan home, and Lightweight Housing of the Year for their Shadforth project.
Notable winners were also Home Group Great Southern, receiving Excellence in Service for the fourth year running, while also picking up Affordable Housing of the Year for their Bayonet Head home, and Custom Built Home of the Year for their Marbelup home. Providing much needed liveable housing stock to the region, Ryde Building Company and Sana Living won Specialised Housing of the Year, Townhouse / Villa of the Year, and Townhouse / Villa Development of the Year.
Geraldton builder Warren Taylor Homes took out HIA-CSR Mid-West Home of the Year for their three-storey home perched on the hillside in Wandina and capturing magnificent Indian Ocean views.
Set on a challenging site with two street frontages and a cascading 15m slope, this substantial family home required extensive retaining, excavation and planning to deliver the outstanding final result.
“The judges were impressed with the outcome described as being crafted to an exceptional finish in every aspect. From the stunning stone and wood-clad exterior to the exquisite interior finishes, including full-height tiling and engineered timber floors, the home offers a perfect blend of sophistication and functionality,” said Mr McGowan.
Other impressive winners in the Mid West included Integrity Homes for their Nanson project which took out awards in the GreenSmart Sustainable Home, Innovation in Housing and Lightweight Housing categories. The Housing Industry Association ACT and Southern NSW region has released its full 2024 ACT election priorities to address the issues facing housing and residential construction in the capital.
Trade shortages loom as a major threat to the Housing Accord’s target of building 1.2 million homes over the next five years. The target equates to an average of 240,000 homes per annum and Australia has only come close to this level of home building on two occasions in the past. The first was in a single year at the peak of the apartment boom of the mid-2010s (232,000 in 2016), and the second was for a single year at the peak of the COVID era cycle (228,000 in 2021).
This policy reflects HIA’s commitment to fostering a more diverse and inclusive residential building industry. HIA supports efforts to work with government and industry to encourage cultural change and broaden opportunities for all individuals.
The Housing Industry Association is calling on the next ACT Government to address the housing crisis currently confronting the nation’s capital.
