The 10th annual Queensland HIA Building Women Awards recognised stellar talent, and shone a spotlight on the huge contribution women are making to building more homes.

“Each year for the past decade, the Housing Industry Association has particularly recognised the excellence of Queensland women working in all facets of home building business,” said HIA Executive Director Queensland, Mike Roberts.

“Our industry has always relied upon smart, hardworking women to ensure more Queenslanders can get a roof over their heads.

“Without the contribution of skilled and dedicated women, the home building industry simply does not function, and our winners this year clearly demonstrate the high value that women are bringing to the table when it comes to getting on with the work of building more homes to tackle the current housing crisis,” Mr Roberts said.

HIA congratulates all the 2024 Queensland HIA Building Women Awards winners:

HIA Professional Woman of the Year Award and Executive Leadership Award

Tochau Nguyen – Buildsafe
Tochau exceeded expectations with her remarkable contributions to Buildsafe. Her proactive management during critical challenges, such as navigating credit limit reductions and implementing risk management strategies, showcases her exceptional problem-solving skills. Judges highlighted her outstanding performance in driving company growth by 30% and transforming organisational culture to be more data-driven. Beyond her professional achievements, Tochau’s dedication to mentoring and education, including her role in guiding future CFOs and contributing to industry symposiums, underscores her profound impact on the home building industry.

Administration Executive Award

Kate Driscoll – Mamet Homes
Starting nine years ago with no construction experience, Kate's dedication and self-driven learning transformed her into a pivotal team member. Judges praised her for driving digital change, upskilling, and achieving significant business efficiencies. Kate’s leadership extends to managing major commercial contracts and mentoring new recruits, making her an inspirational role model in the industry. Her commitment to mental health initiatives for marginalised sectors further highlights her dedication and impact.

Business Development Professional Award

Melissa Wolfe – Plantation Homes
Melissa leads a team of 38 with exemplary communication and leadership skills. Judges praised her for implementing innovative strategies that enhance customer service, relationship management, and business development. She advocates for pay equity and mentorship within the workplace, and her efforts extend beyond her professional role, including mentoring, supporting local sports, and leading environmental initiatives. Melissa’s dedication and multifaceted contributions make her a remarkable role model both in and out of the workplace.

Industry Contribution Award

Di Gaffney – Plantation Homes
Di's impactful career has been marked by her exceptional adaptability and leadership. As Design Studio Manager at Plantation Homes, she guided her team through significant industry changes, including new energy-efficient designs and material challenges. Di's mentorship and commitment to inclusivity have inspired many, promoting professional growth and positive industry change. Her proactive approach and dedication to fostering a supportive environment highlight her as a role model in the construction sector.

Professional Business Woman Award

Carly O'Shea – The Interior Design Association + O’Shea & Sons Builders
Carly exemplifies visionary leadership and dedication to the construction industry. Under her guidance, OSB has grown from a small renovation business to a leader in luxury home construction, known for its emphasis on quality and sustainability. Carly’s commitment extends beyond her company; she is a key supporter and advocate for women in the industry, fostering talent and promoting diversity. Her ability to balance professional and personal responsibilities while driving innovation and excellence makes her an inspiring role model.

Professional Service Excellence Award

Courtney Burns – Azura Building Group
Courtney excels as Azura Building Group's Business Development Manager with her strategic vision and leadership. Her dedication to fostering a positive work culture and her commitment to professional development significantly enhance team performance and business success. Known for her effective communication and mentorship, Courtney's influence extends beyond her role, driving industry excellence and team cohesion. Tradeswoman of the Year Award

Justine Hamilton Ball – East Coast Apprentices
Justine stands out as a remarkable example of dedication in an apprentice. Her proactive mindset is evident in her work, where she introduced a new wiring technique that streamlined installations and reduced time on-site. Her active role in promoting women in trades includes leading workshops that showcase the contributions of women in electrical work. Recognized with multiple awards this year, her dedication is further highlighted by her willingness to travel long distances and work extended hours to master her craft and contribute to her field.

Young Achiever / Trailblazer Award

Lia Wall – Emerald Developments
Despite facing the industry's severe challenges, Lia's innovative approach and keen financial acumen streamlined operations, cut build times, and elevated client satisfaction. Her commitment extends beyond business; she champions mental health support for new mothers and advocates for women's advancement in construction. As one judge remarked, Lia is a "true entrepreneur in the construction industry," redefining success with her leadership and dedication.
