Heelass Homes wins top award for Queensland off-grid masterpiece

Media release
Heelass Homes has taken out the prestigious 2025 HIA Queensland Home of the Year, proudly partnered by COLORBOND steel, for its extraordinary project The Nest, unveiled at the annual HIA Queensland Housing Awards held on Friday 14 November at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The event welcomed over 700 guests including Queensland’s leading residential builders, designers and manufacturers, and was attended by The Hon. Sam O'Connor MP, Minister for Housing and Public Works and Minister for Youth.

The Nest is a remarkable and rare architectural achievement in Brisbane, an off-grid home where sculptural concrete forms, cantilevered roofs, and expansive glazing combine to meet demanding structural and environmental challenges with quiet precision. Set on a complex site, the home features colour-matched concrete and carefully integrated details that allow it to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape.

Designed with passive principles, cross ventilation, and custom finishes, it balances technical complexity with elegant restraint. The result is a timeless residence that breathes with the land, offering strength, serenity, and thoughtful craftsmanship, truly deserving of its recognition as an award-winning masterpiece.

In a standout night for Heelass Homes, The Nest also won HIA Queensland Custom Built Home of the Year, proudly presented by Finlayson’s Timber and Hardware, and HIA Queensland GreenSmart Sustainable Home, proudly presented by TRUECORE steel.

HIA recognised further outstanding projects and businesses on the night:

Mactech Constructions won both HIA Queensland Townhouse of the Year, proudly presented by Rheem, and HIA Queensland Bathroom Design, proudly presented by Construction Skills Queensland, for their Gold Coast project Cloudbreak. Cloudbreak is a five-level residence with panoramic views from ocean to hinterland. Defined by sculptural form, vertical flow and fine detail, Cloudbreak brings a new level of design clarity and independence to dual occupancy living, ambitious in scope and refined in execution.

Adam Smith Homes received the HIA Brisbane/Toowoomba People’s Choice Home Award, proudly presented by COLORBOND steel, for Ajinby, the only publicly voted award. This bold and innovative home blends functional design with striking architectural elements, integrating sustainable principles, smart technologies and contemporary aesthetics to create a cutting-edge living experience in harmony with nature.

Sunshine Coast’s Willow Field was named HIA Queensland Apprentice of the Year, proudly presented by Construction Skills Queensland. Willow’s dedication, work ethic and attention to detail have made her a standout in her trade. Her commitment to mentoring younger apprentices reflects a maturity and leadership that makes her an invaluable asset to her team.

Creation Homes won HIA Queensland Project Home of the Year, proudly presented by Professional Certification Group, for The Westerhill 37, a modern coastal home that combines thoughtful design, sustainable materials and expert craftsmanship. With light-filled living zones, seamless indoor-outdoor flow and future-ready features, it’s a shining example of affordable, contemporary family living.

HIA Queensland Executive Director Michael Roberts said, “HIA is committed to recognising the outstanding achievements of our members. These awards allow us to acknowledge the skill and commitment of our members who excel in building exceptional homes, kitchens and bathrooms and have highly successful businesses”.

“This year’s awards showcase the exceptional quality, innovation and craftsmanship being delivered by our members across the state. Heelass Homes’ The Nest is a truly inspiring project and a deserving winner of HIA Queensland Home of the Year."

“We congratulate all winners and finalists and thank our partners for their continued support of this vital industry. We look forward to seeing some of these outstanding projects compete at the national level in the 2026 HIA Australian Housing Awards”.
