Sarah was awarded the 2026 HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice, recognising not only her technical capability, but the determination and career shift that brought her to the construction industry. The 2026 HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice award is partnered by Stratco.
Employed by HIA Apprentices and hosted by Wright Building & Carpentry, Sarah has quickly built a reputation as a highly capable and driven apprentice across residential renovations, extensions and new builds.
After 15 years working as a nurse and midwife, Sarah made the decision to step away from healthcare following the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as helping a friend with casual labouring work quickly evolved into a new career path, as she discovered a passion for carpentry and the satisfaction of creating something tangible and lasting.
Throughout her apprenticeship, Sarah has developed a broad skillset spanning structural carpentry, project coordination and client engagement. She has contributed to complex, high-value projects including architecturally designed renovations and builds in Bushfire Attack Level Flame Zone environments, while also confidently managing smaller projects from end to end.
Now nearing completion of her Certificate IV in Building and Construction, Sarah is working towards becoming a licensed builder and site supervisor, continuing to build on her hands-on experience with strong technical knowledge.
Her journey into the construction industry, coupled with her commitment to learning, leadership and quality, highlights the evolving pathways into the trades and the important role apprentices play in shaping the future of the industry.
