More land supply to help Tasmania get back on track

Media release

More land supply to help Tasmania get back on track

Media release
HIA has been calling loudly on the State Government to release more land for new housing, as it is a fundamental element in delivering new homes and supporting housing affordability.
Today the Minister for Housing, Planning and Consumer Affairs, Felix Ellis, announced that the Urban Growth Boundary across Greater Hobart will be extended.

In welcoming this announcement, Stuart Collins, HIA Executive Director Tasmania said “The extension of the Urban Growth Boundary will unlock up to 615 hectares of land for residential development, with the potential for 10,000 new homes to be built.

“With Tasmania now rock bottom on HIA’s Housing Scorecard which benchmarks activity in each state and territory against long term averages in home building and renovations activity, lending data and population flows, making more residential land available could not have come at a more important time.

“It is now up to the government to eliminate red tape and push this land through the subdivision approval process, to ensure it is brought to market expediently.

“In addition, government must also consider infill opportunities and housing densification as part of its broader housing solutions,” concluded Mr Collins.
