The Tasmanian election that no-one wanted to have is in full swing, and while the limited campaign period is unlikely to provide the usual platform to promote key policies and reforms, HIA is calling on both major parties to prioritise housing policies given the significant challenges across the state.

HIA Tasmania Executive Director, Stuart Collins, said “It would be remiss of any party or candidate to focus solely on the stadium, when new housing is in such short supply and can help to create jobs and drive the economy.
“With Tasmania rock bottom on HIA’s Housing Scorecard, which benchmarks activity in each state and territory against long term averages in home building and renovations activity, lending data and population flows, now is the time to release land, stimulate housing activity and slash red tape.
“That’s why HIA has welcomed Tasmanian Labor’s announcement that they will extend stamp duty concessions to new homes.
“HIA also supports in principle, the establishment of a body focused on facilitating and de-risking housing developments and urban renewal projects.
“It makes sense to have a body tasked with getting development moving by identifying and conditioning suitable public land for housing and urban renewal projects, and including the acquisition of strategic development sites across Tasmania where the private sector is not currently willing to invest.
“HIA is also calling on both parties to consider reinstating the $30,000 first home buyers grant. This segment of the market is critical to housing supply and has been adversely impacted by the reduction of the grant.
“While previous announcements by the Liberal government on the Urban Growth Boundary expansion and introduction of Development Assessment Panels (or a Planning Authority) demand bi-partisan support to boost and fast track development.
“In addition, continued backing of HIA’s acclaimed youthBuild ‘work ready’ program and the delivery of foundation skills and apprenticeships under the High-Vis Army initiative is a ‘no brainer’ for any incoming government,” concluded Mr Collins.
