“Ben will commence in the role on 25 August, and he brings a deep experience within government, his understanding of the housing and planning system, and his strong connections across the political spectrum making him ideally suited to lead HIA’s work in Tasmania.
“Most recently, Ben has served as Principal Adviser to the Tasmanian Minister for Housing, Planning and Consumer Affairs, where he was at the forefront of the state’s residential construction agenda.
“With ongoing uncertainty around housing supply targets, delays in development approvals and continued shortages in skilled labour and materials, Ben’s insight and policy expertise will be critical in representing the interests of our members.
“Ben returns to HIA bringing a strong background in industrial relations, policy and government engagement having previously led HIA’s Workplace Services team across Victoria and Tasmania,” said Ms Martin.
“Ben takes over the role from Stuart Collins, who has transitioned into a national role within HIA.
“Stuart led HIA, in Tasmania through a period of significant change and challenge, including the state’s COVID recovery, the implementation of Tasmania’s Housing Strategy, establishment of key workforce growth and development initiatives, and the delivery of critical support and guidance to members navigating housing stimulus measures.
“We thank Stuart for his strong leadership and tireless advocacy during his time as Executive Director.
“His ability to engage constructively with government and fight for practical outcomes on behalf of industry has made a lasting difference in Tasmania. We are fortunate to have him continue supporting HIA in a national capacity,” concluded Ms Martin.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed the Tasmanian Government’s decision to join the Federal Help to Buy Scheme, describing it as a sensible and long overdue step that will help more Tasmanians into home ownership while supporting new housing supply.
The ACT Government has released a consultation paper exploring the extension of occupational licensing to additional construction trades.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) is calling for a unified national framework for granny flats and secondary dwellings to ease the housing affordability squeeze - arguing that we could learn from recent changes in Tasmania to permit up to 90 per square metre granny flats and our neighbours in New Zealand who are now fast-tracking compliant small homes.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has lodged a major submission calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the National Construction Code (NCC), warning that excessive regulation and complexity is slowing the delivery of new homes across Australia.
