Comments attributable to Geordan Murray, HIA Executive Director – ACT & Southern NSW
“It is encouraging to see the long-running stalemate over the unused CSIRO site has finally been resolved after years of uncertainty.
"It is long overdue that this site will be made available for more housing.
“For over a decade the ACT's housing strategy has sought to diversify the types of homes being delivered. In practice we've largely replaced the supply of detached homes with the supply of apartments, rather than genuinely broadening the mix of housing options.
"Under the strategy, boosting supply of apartments and suburban infill have been the Government's priorities for addressing ACT's housing shortage.
"However, there is still very strong demand for single detached houses. Producing new residential lots for single detached homes with back yards must also be part of the mix.
"Developing the CSIRO site provides an opportunity to better balance the ACT's new housing supply.
“The ACT needs a balanced pipeline of housing that includes detached homes, townhouses, terraces and apartments so that people have genuine housing choice,” concluded Mr Murray.
Comments attributable to Lalit Prasad, Acting Managing Director
"At a time when home ownership in the ACT is out of reach for a large share of households, it is important that all levels of government work together to improve housing supply.
"It is great to see the ACT and Commonwealth Governments finally reach an agreement that will unlock this significant parcel of land for housing.
The HIA has been advised that due to an increase of plumbing audit inspection failures, from the 1st of September, the Office of the Technical Regulator (OTR) will be further policing non-compliance in the installation of sanitary plumbing and drainage pipework, namely the bedding of sanitary drainage pipes.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed the establishment of the Senate Economics References Committee Inquiry into social housing, describing it as an important opportunity to identify the reforms needed to deliver more housing of all forms at scale and address the bottlenecks holding back housing supply broadly.
“Sales of new homes declined for a third consecutive month in July, falling by 3.7 per cent as higher interest rates and policy uncertainty continued to weigh on consumer confidence,” stated HIA Senior Economist, Tom Devitt.
HIA is proudly supporting National Skills Week this year by highlighting the construction industry’s many and diverse career opportunities.
