Comments attributable to Geordan Murray, HIA Executive Director – ACT & Southern NSW
“It is encouraging to see the long-running stalemate over the unused CSIRO site has finally been resolved after years of uncertainty.
"It is long overdue that this site will be made available for more housing.
“For over a decade the ACT's housing strategy has sought to diversify the types of homes being delivered. In practice we've largely replaced the supply of detached homes with the supply of apartments, rather than genuinely broadening the mix of housing options.
"Under the strategy, boosting supply of apartments and suburban infill have been the Government's priorities for addressing ACT's housing shortage.
"However, there is still very strong demand for single detached houses. Producing new residential lots for single detached homes with back yards must also be part of the mix.
"Developing the CSIRO site provides an opportunity to better balance the ACT's new housing supply.
“The ACT needs a balanced pipeline of housing that includes detached homes, townhouses, terraces and apartments so that people have genuine housing choice,” concluded Mr Murray.

"At a time when home ownership in the ACT is out of reach for a large share of households, it is important that all levels of government work together to improve housing supply.
"It is great to see the ACT and Commonwealth Governments finally reach an agreement that will unlock this significant parcel of land for housing.
Hobart has been identified as the most restrictive capital city in Australia for planning, according to the Australian Zoning Atlas, which found 97 per cent of the city's residential land is subject to restrictions that limit new housing.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed the agreement between the ACT and Commonwealth Governments to facilitate the redevelopment of the under-utilised CSIRO land, describing it as an important step towards increasing housing supply in the Territory.
HIA will continue to update you as we receive further advice and information on the ongoing transition from Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) to the First Resort Home Warranty Scheme (FRHWS).
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed the decision to extend the lease of CSIRO's North Ryde fire testing facility by six months, saying the announcement provides valuable breathing space but does not resolve the long-term threat to Australia's building product testing capability.
