The announcement today that the State government will fully fund training for up to half the State’s council planners to support the rollout of reforms designed to make planning assessments and decisions system faster and fairer.
“Our members have been saying for some time now, that many council planning departments are understaffed and underskilled. This new funding will help to plug those gaps and work hand in glove with planning reforms already announced,” continued Mr Armitage.
“If we have any chance of getting more keys in doors faster, it is imperative that we have the planners with right skills to do so.
“HIA has long acknowledged the great work done by the City of Newcastle with the setup of the Accelerated Development Assessment Program, which speeds up assessment times for housing approvals. That system is the blueprint for how we should be training all planning and development teams to operate across the State.
“For a long time, the NSW planning system has been a barrier to new housing with long and costly approval times. It is fantastic to see this is now changing with the planning system reforms and initiatives like the NSW Planning Practice Program for council planners.
“This is great news for families across NSW wanting to buy a new home sooner,” concluded Mr Armitage.
