“Development Assessment Panels provide an expert independent assessment process for projects, reducing the influence of local politics from decisions and providing Councils and Councillors the opportunity to actively support or oppose certain proposed developments in their municipality, if they wish to,” HIA Executive Director Tasmania, Ben Price said.
“In other words, they are the perfect planning process for data centres.”
Mr Price said that Development Assessment Panels had been recommitted to by the Tasmanian Government in last year’s election campaign, draft legislation had been released last November, and it was time to urgently get on with it.
“Councils can’t have their cake and eat it too,” Mr Price said.
“The main argument used against DAPs by Councils is that there is supposedly no demonstrated need for them. Well, that argument has now been well and truly blown out of the water by their own desperate desire to wash their hands of assessing data centres.
“Councils have nothing to lose, and the State has everything to gain by urgently progressing the DAPs legislation so that data centres can be independently assessed, while also allowing an independent assessment path for at times controversial housing planning and development applications.
“State Parliament resumes in two weeks and with the draft legislation nearly a year into consultation, there’s no reason why the legislation can’t be introduced and through the Parliament by the end of the year.
“It is a win-win, and we urge the Government to urgently get on with it.”
