National Skills Week: Putting Construction Careers in the Spotlight

Media release

National Skills Week: Putting Construction Careers in the Spotlight

Media release
“HIA is getting right behind National Skills Week to showcase the great opportunities in the construction industry,” stated Geordan Murray, Executive Director – Future Workforce.
“The lack of affordable housing is one of the most significant issues facing Australian Households.

“Restoring affordability needs the next generation to take up the challenge of building enough homes to meet the needs of Australia’s growing population.

“The government has backed this plan with a bold target to build 1.2 million homes over the next five years.

“Building more homes than ever before will require more skilled workers than ever before.

“Whether it be an apprenticeship in carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing, electrics, or roofing, a trade qualification provides a highly valuable skill set while also opening doors to tremendous career opportunities in the industry.

“Some of the largest and most successful businesses in the construction industry were founded by people who began their career in a trade.

“Tradies are in high demand in the building industry and apprenticeships provide a great learning pathway, with the added benefit of being paid while you learn.

“Trade careers often take the lime-light but the housing industry also offers a wide range of non-trade careers.

“Building today’s high tech and energy efficient homes requires teams of highly skilled designers, drafters, architects, engineers, energy assessors, surveyors, scientists and manufactures.

“Throughout National Skills Week we are encouraging school leavers and career changers around the country to discover the great opportunities on offer in the housing industry,” concluded Mr Murray.
