HIA is also advocating for greater access to regional training, targeted skilled migration where local shortages cannot be filled, and improved recognition of overseas trade qualifications.
HIA Executive Director South Australia Stephen Knight said South Australia has an opportunity to make skilled trades a much bigger part of its workforce strategy.
“To support South Australia’s growth, we need a strong focus on apprenticeships and developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople. We need to grow our own workforce and continue to show young South Australians that a career in residential construction offers genuine opportunities and a strong future.
“Governments must continue to support employers, apprentices and schools through practical incentives and programs that promote construction as a rewarding and sustainable career pathway.
“We also need to change the way we talk to young Australians about careers. University will remain the right choice for many, but an apprenticeship should not be treated as a second choice.
“Tradies can earn while they learn, develop skills that will remain in demand and have a genuine pathway to running their own business. And in an economy being reshaped by AI, those practical skills are only becoming more valuable. Technology can help design a home, prepare an estimate or manage a project. It still can’t turn up on site and build the house.
“South Australia’s plans for more housing, infrastructure and economic growth all depend on people with the skills to deliver them. If we want to build more, we need to train more. South Australia’s future is built by tradies,” concluded Mr Knight.
