HIA Executive Director Victoria, Keith Ryan, said expanding training capacity is important if the industry is to meet demand for new homes as Victoria’s population grows.
"Additional investment in TAFE facilities as announced today will help ensure apprentices and trainees have access to modern training environments and the skills needed to build Victoria's future," Mr Ryan said.
“The upgrade to Chisholm’s Dandenong campus to include a new Home Building Centre also sounds promising.
"Improving training infrastructure is an important part of the solution, but we also need to attract more young people into vocational education and construction careers in the first place."
Mr Ryan said further support is needed to strengthen pathways from secondary school into trades and vocational training.
"Technical Colleges have in the past played an important role in exposing students to practical career options and creating direct pathways into apprenticeships and TAFE training. They can do so again," he said.
"We encourage all political parties to invest in initiatives that help students discover rewarding careers in the building and construction industry. This requires support while they are still at school.
"Victoria faces a significant shortage of skilled tradespeople at a time when governments need to increase housing supply. Expanding TAFE capacity is a positive but it must be matched by measures that encourage more school students to choose vocational education and building careers,” concluded Mr Ryan.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed today's election commitment by Labor to build two new TAFEs and upgrade existing training facilities, describing the investment as an important step towards addressing Victoria's construction skills shortage.

HIA has been actively advocating on behalf of members for the urgent commencement of South Australia's scrap metal dealer legislation. This is to address the ongoing issue of stolen scrap metal, particularly copper, which continues to cause delays and costs for residential building sites across the state.
