"October marks National Safe Work Month, a time for everyone in the building industry to pause, reflect and reinforce their commitment to creating safe and healthy workplaces," said HIA Senior Executive Director Compliance and Workplace Relations, Stuart Collins.
"A cornerstone of HIA's activities during National Safe Work Month is our annual Safety Summit, which this year will be held in Adelaide. Following successful events in Newcastle and Perth, the Summit has become an important forum for sharing practical safety knowledge and addressing the real challenges faced by residential builders.
"The one-day event is designed for builders, contractors, site managers, supervisors, safety professionals and WHS leaders who are responsible for keeping workers safe while delivering projects efficiently.
"This year's program will feature keynote speakers from government, regulators and industry who will provide attendees with the latest insights into workplace safety requirements, emerging risks and practical approaches to managing compliance onsite.
"Importantly, attendees will leave with real-world tools and strategies they can take back to their businesses to improve safety outcomes, strengthen workplace culture and reduce the likelihood of incidents and injuries.
"This year's National Safe Work Month theme, 'Safe work for life', highlights that workplace health and safety is about more than preventing harm today. It is about creating safe and healthy work practices that protect workers throughout their careers and support their long-term health and wellbeing.
"Safer workplaces start with informed leaders, engaged workers and open conversations about risk. The Safety Summit provides an opportunity for the industry to come together, learn from experts and each other, and identify practical actions that can be applied immediately onsite.
"Every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of the day, and every business benefits from a strong culture of safety. The Safety Summit is about helping our industry achieve both," said Mr Collins.
The HIA Safety Summit 2026 takes place Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm at the HIA office in Hindmarsh, Adelaide.
HIA’s annual Safety Summit is being held today in Adelaide (8 October) and will bring together industry leaders, regulators and workplace safety experts, providing practical guidance to help residential builders and tradies create safer worksites and support compliance in an ever-changing world.
The Housing Industry Association (HIA) is calling on the Australian Taxation Office and Federal Government to reverse the decision to cease accepting credit card payments from 30 November, warning the change needs to be viewed against the cumulative financial pressure already confronting residential building businesses.
“Housing commencements rose in the year to June 2026, but the latest data reflects yesterday's market, not the conditions facing builders today,” stated HIA Executive Director, Keith Ryan.
New figures show demand for new homes is returning in Tasmania, with building approvals growing faster than in any other state, yet the number of homes actually being started remains further below its ten-year average than anywhere else in the country.
