The voice of home building in Tasmania
Tasmania needs more homes, and the people who build them know what is getting in the way.
HIA is the voice of the residential building industry. In Tasmania, we take what our members tell us to the state government, councils and infrastructure providers, and we push for the changes that get homes built: more serviced and zoned land, a planning system that says yes faster, simpler approvals, and a skilled workforce to do the work.
We have your back, and we will push for a better system that allows you to build more homes, and for your businesses to succeed.
Our position is simple. Government support should go toward building new homes, because supply is what makes housing more affordable.
We back that up with data, and we say it publicly. If a rule, a fee or a delay is holding up your business, tell HIA about it. That is how our advocacy starts.

CBOS has split in two: who to contact now
From 1 October 2026, CBOS no longer exists as a single agency. The Tasmanian Government has split its work between two regulators, Building Standards Tasmania (BST) and Consumer Affairs Tasmania (CAT).
HIA remembers Kevin Brock
It is with great sadness that I advise of the passing of HIA Life Member Kevin Brock, aged 87.
Implementing carpentry registration and licensing Consultation Paper
Imposing registration and licensing on trades represents a significant impost, further degrading the capacity to deliver homes and other domestic building work. This submission, therefore, is not limited to responding to the Consultation Paper, rather, it addresses more broadly the significant risks that imposing registration and licensing on trades will have on the sector.
Government delays ATO credit card payment changes
The Federal Government has announced that the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will continue to accept credit card payments for tax liabilities until the end of the 2026-27 financial year, delaying changes that were previously due to take effect on 1 December.
