The Victorian government has pushed its Buyer Protection Bill through the lower house of Parliament and will no doubt expect to have this legislation passed in a couple of weeks time. HIA will continue to challenge this Bill due to the major flaws it contains. The Bill may pass but the battle will not.
In some good news the new Minister for Consumer Affairs has informed HIA that work on a Bill to update domestic building contract laws has been accelerated and we should see the results in coming months. This has the potential to better balance, at least in contracts, the rights of builders and clients. The Bill is also an opportunity for the government to fix the flaws in the Buyer Protection Bill.
Finally, a reminder that the HIA National Conference is being held in Melbourne this year. This acknowledges Victoria being the birthplace of the HIA. A special 2-day pass is available for HIA members – which includes your workforce if they are associates. Associate membership is at no extra cost. I hope to see you at this exciting event.
