An overview of Australian Standard AS 4654.2 which provides designers, builders, waterproofers and manufacturers with the requirements for the design and installation of external waterproofing membrane systems applied to roofs, decks, balconies and planter boxes in buildings.

Overview of the Standard

AS 4654.2 sets out the requirements for the design and installation of waterproofing membranes for above ground use associated with external waterproofing membrane systems applied to roofs, decks, balconies and planter boxes in buildings.

What does it include?

AS 4654.2 is broken into 2 sections consisting of:

  • Section 1 – provides the scope and definitions that apply to this Standard
  • Section 2 – is divided into 16 parts and deals with the design and installation of external waterproofing membrane systems including service conditions, substrate requirements, membrane placement and location, curing, treatment at door and window openings, movement control, drainage and overflows.

This standard also contains 2 informative appendices consisting of:

  • Appendix A – (informative) Vertical upward termination heights – This appendix provides the minimum vertical termination height of the membrane where the membrane is to prevent water entry.
  • Appendix B – (informative) Maintenance – specifies that where visible the waterproofing system should be inspected on a regular basis for evidence of deterioration.

Is the Standard referenced in NCC or other legislation?

The Standard is referenced in both NCC Volume One and Two and provides Deemed-to-Satisfy external waterproofing requirements under F1D4 and F1D5 in Volume One and H2D8 Volume Two.

Both NCC Volume 1 and Volume 2 clarify the application of AS 4654 in relation to what areas or elements they apply to or not apply to.
